La Estación Ballenera Vasca de Red Bay, en Labrador, Canadá, celebrará el 21 de junio el día de sus orígenes

La Estación Ballenera Vasca de Red Bay,Labrador, Canadá, celebrará el 21 de junio el día de sus antecesores con diversos juegos y actividades y una conferencia sobre cultura local a cargo de Joe Goudie que se desarrollará en el Centro de Interpretación. El 1 de julio Red Bay conmemorará el día nacional de Canadá y el 16 de julio el día de los Parque nacionales de Canadá con visitas guiadas y diversas interpretaciones y recreaciones de lo que fue la vida de la pequeña localidad dedicada a la pesca de ballena en el siglo XVI.

Ocasionales interpretes locales se vestirán a la usanza de hace casi quinientos años narrando viejas historias, conmemorando las escenas diarias de la vida de los balleneros y detallando su actividad en las pesquerías extrayendo grasas y aceites de los cetáceos. También se mostrarán a las personas que asistan a las jornadas los diversos puntos de interés arqueológico con balleneros todavía hundidos, el museo arqueológico y el cementerio de Saddle Island donde reposan los restos de marinos vascos.

Weather

Temperate maritime climate. Weather patterns can change quickly. Be prepared for a variety of conditions. Bring sturdy footwear and warm, wind and waterproof clothing even in summer.  Temperatures in Labrador are generally cooler than other areas of the province. During the summer days range from 15-20 °C, and nights from 10-15 °C.

Activities

Experience 16th century Basque whaling traditions, brought to life through costumed interpreters, original artifacts, scale models of work buildings, photographs and a 30-minute film. See original artifacts recovered from archaeological excavations. Get a close-up view of a 16th century chalupa. Discover tools and weapons used by the Basques, along with well-preserved personal items. Tour Saddle Island to see the archaeological remains of buildings where the Basques worked and lived 400 years ago.

Echos from the past

Costumed interpreters share amazing tales of shipwrecks and adventure as you learn of the dramatic voyages from the Basque Country to Labrador in search of lucrative whale oil. Fortunes are won, and some Basque whalers won’t survive the season.
