Elika, es una Fundación Pública, adscrita al Departamento de Desarrollo Económico e Infraestructuras, cuyo objetivo es conseguir el máximo grado de seguridad agro-alimentaria en la CAPV. Para ello: Presta asesoramiento técnico y científico a los departamentos competentes en materia de agricultura, alimentación, ganadería, pesca, consumo y salud. Promueve la colaboración entre las administraciones públicas, las universidades y centros de investigación, los sectores productivos y las organizaciones de consumidores. Evalúa la exposición de la población a los riesgos para la salud asociados al consumo de alimentos en todas las fases de la cadena alimentaria, mediante la identificación y la caracterización de los posibles peligros biológicos, químicos, físicos y medioambientales. Impulsa y desarrolla programas de formación dirigidos a administraciones, sector agroalimentario y consumidores. Difunde información científica y técnica en el ámbito de la seguridad alimentaria.

800 soup kitchens in the Basque Country participate in an awareness campaign against food waste
• 170,000 users and workers participated in the "Food Is Not Thrown Away" (Janaria ez da botatzen) campaign, promoted by the Department of Food and Rural Development. Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government with its Elika Foundation• Objective: to reduce waste by 50% in the retail and consumer sectors and by 20% in production and supply chains”• 9 collective catering companies in the Basque Country are collaborating with the Elika Foundation to prevent and reduce food waste in this sector• Minister Mrsa Amaia Barredo: “The Law against Food Loss and Waste and the objectives established by Europe urge us to collaborate between public and private stakeholders for a sustainable food system”
