Barcelona, 03/Feb/2025
Today the Barcelona Wine Week 2025 has begun, which, in its fifth edition, is consolidating itself as the strategic promotion point for the best wineries in the country. 45 Basque production companies are participating in this fair through the organization of the Department of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government and the HAZI Foundation. A record attendance by the wineries of Euskadi that represent the wines of Rioja Alavesa, the Txakolís of Araba, Bizkaia and Getaria, and the Cider of the Basque Country, which for the second year participates as a Designation of Origin.
The Minister for Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries, Mrs Amaia Barredo, accompanied by the Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Raúl Perez Iratxeta, and the Director of Quality and Food Promotion, Mrs Nora Beltran de Otaola, showed the support of the Basque Government to the 45 Basque wineries that participate in this key event of the wine sector.
Amaia Barredo participated in the opening ceremony of Barcelona Wine Week chaired by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, together with other ministers from Galicia, Catalonia and La Rioja. She also participated in the presentation of EDA Wine and Drinks Campus and attended the event of the Regulatory Council of the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin on its Centenary.
During her visit, Minister Barredo highlighted the importance of this fair as an international showcase for opening up new business opportunities, strengthening the connection with distributors, restaurateurs and professionals in the sector and consolidating the international projection of wines and cider from the Basque Country. “The Basque Country has a centuries-old winemaking tradition that has managed to combine the know-how of generations with innovation and sustainability, giving rise to wines of great quality and their own personality. The excellence of our wineries, together with the uniqueness of their wines, positions us as a benchmark in the market and opens up new opportunities for us to continue growing internationally,” said the Minister.
EDA Campus
After the institutional inauguration of the Barcelona fair, the presentation of EDA Drinks & Wine Campus took place, the Basque Culinary Center project promoted by the Department of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government and the Territorial Council of Araba, which will strengthen the wine and beverage sector through training, research, innovation and support for entrepreneurship, as was announced with its training offer last week.
“It is no secret that the countryside, vineyards, wineries and the entire commercial development of wine are experiencing difficult times in the Basque Country, in Catalonia and throughout the European Union, but they can be overcome if we do it right. The challenges of the first sector are challenges for the country and that is how we approach and manage them” commented Minister Mrs Amaia Barredo.
Amaia Barredo pointed out that “Rioja Alavesa represents in the Basque Country our tradition and connection with the first sector, it is our essence and culture for excellence, a formidable example of our identity as a people. The first sector represents a fundamental pillar of our society. The progress between rural and urban areas must be balanced.”
Basque wineries exhibit their products in three stands within the area of the fair called “BWW Lands”, reserved for small and medium-sized wineries grouped into more than 70 Denominations of Origin and other quality seals.
The stand for Rioja Alavesa wines has 25 wineries with the Rioja Qualified Denomination of Origin; the Txakolí stand of Euskadi hosts 16 txakolí wineries, 9 with D.O. Getaria, 3 with D.O. Araba and 4 with D.O. Bizkaia. The Euskal Sagardoa/Sidra del País Vasco stand has 4 cider houses.
Due to the large number of visitors last year, this year the space dedicated to the Basque Country has the Basque Wine Bar, an exhibition and tasting area for wines under the promotional brand Basque Wine, where Basque wineries offer personalized and specific attention that highlights the wines individually.
The Basque Wine Bar has the expert oenologist Mr Mikel Garaizabal who comments on and advises the public about the wines on display in this space. Therefore, visitors who show interest in any of the wines can access the stand where the producing winery is located.
High participation
Barcelona Wine Week is taking place from today until Wednesday 5 February at the Montjuic venue of the Fira de Barcelona. This year the show has grown by 31% to reach 9,500 m2 of exhibition space due to the increase in demand for participation from companies.

In this sense, more than 700 major buyers and importers from strategic countries will participate, including traditional European destinations, but also the United States, Canada, China, Mexico, Japan, Brazil, Colombia and South Korea.
