  • This funding will be provided by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (FEMPA) and the Basque Government.

At a press conference, government spokesperson María Ubarretxena gave an account of the different lines of aid approved at today’s Governing Council meeting; €13.5 million for the fishing and aquaculture sectors and €600,000 for purebred livestock breeders.

The first line of aid approved by the Governing Council, initially proposed by the Department of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries, corresponds to the order of aid to the fisheries and aquaculture sector which allocated a total of €13,580,700. Of that, €9,506,490 is funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (FEMPA) and €4,074,210 is funded from the general budget of the Basque Government.

“These grants are in line with the objectives of the European Union Common Fisheries Policy, which are: strengthening the professional and profitable fleet, guaranteeing sustainable exploitation of biological marine resources, which allows for exploitation that does not put the biological balance of populations or the integrity of the environment at risk.

The green light was also given to 600.000 euros in grants for purebred livestock production associations, for conservation, selection, improvement and promotion.

María Ubarretxena also announced that the President of the Basque Country, or Lehendakari, shared with the team the challenges set for the next two years of the presidency of the Atlantic Arc Commission. Imanol Pradales was appointed president of the Commission on 3 October.
