Mrs Amaia Barredo, Minister of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government, considers it necessary “that private initiatives arising from young companies promote new economic activities in the primary sector. They will always have institutional support”. Barredo attended the opening of the Esférica Rioja Alavesa Festival in Samaniego, which runs until Sunday with musical performances, gastronomy, culture and art in various wineries in Laguardia, Samaniego and Labastida.
Along with Amaia Barredo, Álvaro de Azcárate and Carlos Montilla, co-directors of the Esférica Rioja Alavesa Festival, Cristina González and Saray Zárate, territorial deputies for Tourism and Economic Development and Sustainability of Araba, and José María Elvira, president of the “Cuadrilla Rioja Alavesa”, participated in the opening.
“Initiatives such as Esférica Rioja Alavesa show the possibilities that a Region like this one must promote itself, to develop a pleasant, sustainable lifestyle that is in no way inferior to the saturated urban agendas. The truth is that Rioja Alavesa -and, with it, all of Araba and the Basque Country (Euskadi)- is experiencing some hopeful moments of evolution and development with its positive reference in the rural world" Amaia Barredo has pointed out.
Barredo has referred to "the current vicissitudes of the wine markets since, in practically all the denominations of origin, competition grows, prices fluctuate, and commercial work is more difficult. Fortunately, here, in Rioja Alavesa, we are accompanied by know-how, the excellent training of our people, the determined institutional support from the Basque Government and the Territorial Council and, of course, the superb quality of our products".
Development
"When we talk about Rural Development, we refer to the need for new and better living conditions for our sector and the objective of having -here or in any of our lands- elements that make life in the countryside truly attractive" Barredo has stressed.
For the person in charge of the primary sector in the Basque Country, “this idea of rural promotion is nothing other than a promising action full of hope. Above all, for our youth who will succeed us in the field work and in rural services and industries with a logically more advanced training than ours. If our youth has attractive jobs, with up-to-date leisure and a living culture, with complete assistance and social services, the generational change will be largely guaranteed.”
“The scenarios - as is the case of this Baigorri Winery -, the posters - such as those starring Coque Malla, Ángel Stanich, Feet, Galerna, María Jaume, or others -, or the original experiences of “blind tasting”, “acoustic tasting”, “territory tasting”, “Basque wine tasting” and its “gastronomic spaces” and art, constitute a luxury attraction for this Rioja Alavesa scenario” added Barredo.
The Minister has conveyed her “congratulations to Rioja Alavesa, to those who promote it and to those who devise this type of initiatives every day that disseminate and promote the Basque primary sector and its offer of advanced and sustainable life, in line with the objectives of the most developed Europe”.
Barredo has encouraged the youth of Rioja Alavesa, “to enjoy these days and to continue devising sustainable economic activities and initiatives in this environment, far beyond the excellent wine produced in Rioja Alavesa”.
