Mrs Amaia Barredo, Minister of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government, participated this morning in the Santiago Agricultural Fair, in Vitoria-Gasteiz, which dedicated a tribute to the 1,500 Alava families who cultivate nearly 13,000 hectares of vineyard. The displays of livestock, old machinery and paintings painted with wine by Larry Karlin at the Araba University Campus have brought together thousands of people throughout the morning.
“This day gives well-deserved recognition to the more than 230 wineries located in Rioja Alavesa that produce excellent wines and represent Araba and all the Basque Country at the highest levels of oenology and gastronomy, as well as those who work there and make them, and especially to the youth of the region who relieve their elders in the tasks of the vineyard, the cereal and the olive tree,” commented Amaia Barredo.
The products of Rioja Alavesa, especially wine and oil, have been protagonists this morning at the Santiago Fair along with a selection of foods produced and grown in Araba and a variety of animals raised in the Territory: Azpigorri goats, Latxa sheep and Sasi ardi, terrestrial cows, Enkarerri donkey and mountain horses.
