Donostia-St Sebastián, 2024 07 19

Mrs Amaia Barredo, Minister of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government, proposes that activities linked to the blue economy are “elemental for the diversification of the fishing sector, based on its knowledge and activities related to its own activity within economic diversification: fishing, tourism, new fishing products, or new industrial production of their derivatives”

The Minister has closed the EHU UPV Summer Course held at the Miramar Palace in Donostia-St Sebastián entitled “The blue economy of coastal areas” directed by Mr Koldo Goitia, from the Basque Government (Hazi), together with Mrs Itziar Azkue, academic deputy director of the Summer Courses and in which 150 people have participated. Joan Alginet, Ibon Cancio, Rosa Chapela, Elena Herbello, Maitane Leizaola, Pepe Martinez, José Alberto Orbe Izagirre, Basilio Otero, Manuel Pleguezuelo and Ekaitz Urtiaga participated among the presentations.

“Ports and their municipalities have to play an important role in their sustainable development and in the transition towards the blue economy. To take advantage of this opportunity, it is necessary to reconsider the role and potential of ports as poles of blue growth” indicated Amaia Barredo.

For the head of the first productive sector in the Basque Country, “initiatives such as the Blue Economy Pole, in the Oarsoaldea Preferential Attention Area, and the aid order to promote the transition towards the Blue Economy in the 16 fishing municipalities, constitute an example of support for its implementation on the Basque coast.”

Southwestern Europe

“If there is a country in Europe dedicated to the sea, it is ours: the Basque Country. Basque society, in its different administrations and dependencies, has a great commitment to the sea in this corner of southwestern Europe. We just have to look out of these bay windows and appreciate that great “blue” that we have in front of us. Fortunately, our country is aware of its importance for our economy and for our environmental sustainability,” commented Amaia Barredo.

The Minister of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government shares “fully with the rest of the European Union initiatives, concerns and conservation and development projects of what the sea means.” “The “blue economy” encompasses both the economic sectors directly supported by the marine environment - fishing, maritime transport, aquaculture or energy generation - and those located in the terrestrial environment: ports, shipyards, canning industry, infrastructure. naval or marine tourism” has highlighted
