The Basque Country will contribute its experience to the Urban Agenda for Peace and Non-Violence in Colombia

2024 May 7
  • The workshop was attended by experts in peace and human rights, Basque institutions and NGDOs.
  • The pilot agenda is intended to serve as a model for addressing violence in Colombian and other Latin American cities.

eLankidetza-Basque Agency for Cooperation and Solidarity together with Bilbao City Council and the association Phare Territorios Globales organised a workshop this morning on the contribution of the Basque Country's experience to the Urban Agenda for Peace and Non-violence in Colombia. The pilot agenda will be implemented in the city of Buenaventura and is expected to serve as a model for Colombia and other contexts in Latin America and around the world.

The project is promoted by the Phare Global Territories Association in collaboration with the Colombian Presidential Agency for International Cooperation (APC) and with the support of eLankidetza, part of the Basque Government's Department of Equality, Justice and Social Policies. The aim is to comprehensively address the multiple expressions of violence in cities. The initiative also seeks to promote economic inclusion, foster peaceful coexistence and encourage active citizen participation in order to tackle the structural roots of violence and contribute to the process of total peace in Colombia.

Through its three phases, the project proposes the creation of an Urban Agenda for Peace and Non-violence model, its localisation in a specific territory in articulation with local actors, and the elaboration of a guide for its replication in other cities.

Buenaventura, the pilot city

The city of Buenaventura is known for being the country’s most important seaport in the Pacific Ocean, making it a major hub for national development. But also, for its commitment to peace, non-violence and the protection of human rights. Being conscious of the multidimensional reality of urban violence, and through the initiative "Buenaventura, Power of Life in Total Peace", the city committed itself to dialogue with the different actors involved, contributing to the Total Peace Process that is taking place in the country.

The pilot action will be launched after the international conference to be held in Bogota on 9 July, which will serve to present the Urban Agenda for Peace and Non-Violence model.
