Basque Government presides 2004 Atlantic Arc Commission General Assembly in Portugal

2024 April 10
  • It is the fifth General Assembly presided by the Basque Country, which holds the Presidency of the Atlantic Arc since 2020.

On behalf of the Lehendakari, the Basque General Secretary for the European Union and Foreign Affairs, Maria Elorza presides the General Assembly of the Atlantic Arc Commission (AAC) at Sines (Portuguese Alentejo).

The Assembly brings together political representatives from 15 territories comprising the Atlantic Arc, who will debate some the most important issues for the Atlantic region, such as the creation of the Atlantic Macroregion - the flagship proposal of the Basque presidency - or the Atlantic façade as a future valley of innovation. The decarbonisation of the Atlantic fleet and the role of ports will also be discussed in detail; it is no coincidence that this edition is being hosted in a city that is home to one of the most important ports in Europe.

The meeting will conclude with the adoption of a political declaration highlighting the critical need to tackle the challenges of the Atlantic area at a time when the geopolitical focus is on eastern Europe. The declaration calls for sustainable development of the Atlantic for 2030, based on more innovative, resilient and socially cohesive cooperation. With these ambitious objectives in mind, the leaders of the Atlantic regions and autonomous communities reiterated their demand to establish, as soon as possible, a macro-regional Atlantic strategy, developing multi-level governance that involves sub-state public administrations and stakeholders in the roll-out.
