Nominations are currently being accepted for the 9th edition of the Basque Culinary World Prize, which recognises chefs with transformative initiatives.

  • In 2024, the Basque Culinary World Prize aims to enhance and celebrate the transformative power of gastronomy, its influence on society, and its capacity to effect change. In its ninth edition, this recognition is established as a special distinction within a sector where gastronomy has proven to be a multiplying and inspiring phenomenon at a global level. This is due to the work of talented, knowledgeable, and creative chefs who generate positive impacts on society.
  • Professionals and institutions in the gastronomy sector can nominate chefs who have transformative initiatives with an impact on areas such as innovation, technology, education, environment, health, the food industry, social or economic development, among others.
  • The 'Nobel Prize of Gastronomy’ prize, which has garnered attention from academics, experts, and chefs worldwide, has had over 1,200 nominations and nearly 800 nominees from 42 countries. This has sparked a global conversation among academics, experts and chefs about the significant role of gastronomy in driving social change.
  • The winner will be announced in Lima (Peru) at a public event on 19 June 2024. They will receive 100,000 euros to spend on a project of their choice that expresses gastronomy’s transformative power.

The nomination process is now open for the 9th edition of the Basque Culinary World Prize. This annual award recognises chefs with transformative initiatives. In 2024, the prize emphasises the strengthening and exaltation of gastronomy’s transformative power, its reach, and its capacity to influence society.

The Basque Government and the Basque Culinary Center have gained global recognition for their pioneering efforts. This special distinction is highly regarded in the gastronomy sector, which is proving to be a multiplying and inspiring phenomenon worldwide. Talented chefs, who possess knowledge and creativity, generate positive impacts in areas such as science, health, innovation, nutrition, education, social, economic, and environmental development.

After highlighting the role that cuisine could play in cultural integration in Türkiye in 2023, the Basque Culinary World Prize continues to showcase inspiring stories of chefs who generate social impact in many places today, thanks to social development and biodiversity.

The winner is selected by an interdisciplinary jury consisting of influential chefs, academics, and international experts. Each year, the award committee selects a chef whose work exemplifies the award's mission of transforming society through gastronomy. The chosen chef receives €100,000 to fund an initiative that showcases gastronomy’s transformative power.

Open to nominations

Culinary professionals and institutions have until 15 April to nominate chefs who showcase how gastronomy can drive change. Nominations should be submitted via the Basque Culinary World Prize website: www.basqueculinaryworldprize.com

This award seeks to recognise culinary professionals from around the world and is open to any chef with professional experience in the sector, regardless of their culinary culture, nationality, or notoriety.

 Nominations process:

After the nomination period closes, the Basque Culinary World Prize secretariat, composed of academics and gastronomy experts, will analyse the candidates.

The winner will be selected at the Jury meeting in Peru in June 2024 and announced in Lima (PUCP) at an event called T'impuy on 19 June, which will be open to the public. An interdisciplinary jury, chaired by Joan Roca (Spain) and composed of some of the world's most influential chefs, including Pía León (Peru), Gastón Acurio (Peru), Dominique Crenn (France/USA), Mauro Colagreco (Argentina/France), Yoshihiro Narisawa (Japan), Manu Buffara (Brazil), Josh Niland (Australia), Narda Lepes (Argentina), Thitid Tassanakajohn (Thailand), Trine Hahnemann (Denmark), and Elena Reygadas (Mexico), among others, will make the final decision.

An endorsed award:

The award has had a significant impact by showcasing the work of chefs leading the way in areas such as climate change, food waste, biodiversity, humanitarian aid, and social inclusion. It has also brought visibility to the inspiring stories of these professionals and their expertise.

Chef Ebru Baybara won the Basque Culinary World Prize 2023 for her contribution to cultural integration in Mardin, near the Syrian border, through gastronomy. She has been involved in initiatives addressing the migratory crisis in the region for two decades, revitalising soils in the face of climate change, and providing humanitarian assistance in response to tragedies such as the earthquake in Türkiye in February 2023.

In previous years, the winning chefs hailed from various regions around the globe: Fatmata Binta (Sierra Leone - 2022), Xanty Elías (Spain - 2021), José Andrés (Spain/USA - 2020), Anthony Myint (USA - 2019), Jock Zonfrillo (Australia - 2018), Leonor Espinosa (Colombia - 2017) and María Fernanda di Giacobbe (Venezuela - 2016).
