A delegation from Emakunde, led by its director Miren Elgarresta, travelled to the United States this week to participate in the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), the UN’s largest annual gathering on gender equality and women’s empowerment. This year’s session will take place under the priority theme, “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”.
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the primary international intergovernmental organisation committed solely to advancing gender equality and empowering women. CSW plays a vital role in promoting women's rights by documenting women's realities worldwide, developing international standards on gender equality and women's empowerment.
Today, Emakunde’s director is participating in a dialogue on alliances to resource and empower local feminist leadership. The event is dedicated to local and regional governments and includes representatives from other world regions. It is being held at the UN headquarters in New York.
Additionally, at the event, the Basque delegation is meeting with various international organisations dedicated to promoting equality, such as UN Women and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), to exchange experiences and best practices. The delegation also met with the Global Alliance for Care to formalise the Basque Country's inclusion in the alliance. They also met with Equimundo: Center for Masculinities and Social Justice, to share the initiatives of Emakunde's Gizonduz programme.
Today, a meeting has been scheduled with a delegation from UN Women to formalise the Basque Country's incorporation into the accountability of the Generation Equality initiative. The meeting’s aim is to analyse the progress of the Country Pact for equality and lives free of violence against women.
The Emakunde delegation had the opportunity to learn about the Action Coalition on Technology and Innovation, which is one of the Six Action Coalitions forming part of the Generation Equality Forum. These coalitions serve as a global roadmap for gender equality.
The meetings are made possible thanks to Unai Telleria, the Basque Country’s Delegation in the United States.
