43 Basque wineries present their wines at ProWein 2024, Europe's largest fair dedicated to the beverage industry

• 27 companies participating this year are grouped together under the Euskadi Basque Country – Basque Wine brand.

• ProWein is considered one of the major showcase events of the wine industry sector, and was attended by 49,000 professionals from 141 countries in the previous year.

ProWein 2024, Europe's largest international fair dedicated to the wine and spirits industry sector, has been underway in Düsseldorf since yesterday, with the world's leading wine producers among its exhibitors.

27 Basque wineries grouped under the Euskadi - Basque Country – Basque Wine brand will participate in the 30th edition of the fair, with a stand of 290 m². The group includes 16 wineries from Rioja Alavesa, 6 Txakoli de Getaria wineries, 2 Txakoli de Álava wineries, a Txakoli de Bizkaia winery, a craft distiller and a premium beverages distributor.

The joint participation of the Basque businesses is carried out through the Basque government and HAZI and is part of the actions of the Basque Food Industry Promotion Plan boosting the visibility of Basque beverages in international markets.

This morning the Basque Regional Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy, Bittor Oroz, together with the Director of Food Quality and Industry, Raúl Perez, visited the Basque wineries and companies participating in ProWein 2024.

This year, in addition to the wineries and companies presenting their products under the Euskadi Basque Country brand, another 16 Basque wineries are taking part with their own stand at the German fair.

Euskadi wine exports

Last year Germany was the fourth largest export destination for wines from the Basque Country, both in terms of value (14.8 million euros) and volume (2.1 million litres sold).

Basque wines were exported to 108 world markets across 5 continents. The United States remains the top market in terms of value, despite a decrease in sales compared to 2022, which was an excellent year. The K closely follows the USA in Alavese wine sales and is currently the leading market in terms of volume. There has also been a significant increase in demand in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Mexico and France are growing at a steady pace in terms of value.

PDO bottled wine is the main driver of Basque exports, accounting for over 60% of the volume and 85% of the total value. The Basque Country exported the total amount of 36 million litres in 2023, with a value of 182.6 million euros, at a rising average price that reached 5.06 €/litre.

ProWein, international showcase event

ProWein Düsseldorf is considered Europe's prime meeting point for establishing business relations with producers and distributors from all over the world.

The fair is exclusively aimed at a professional audience, and the visitors are expert buyers from various distribution channels (wholesalers, hotel industry, catering, specialised retailers, importers, large chains, etc.).

Trends and developments in the wine sector will be presented at ProWein 2024 through special exhibitions, seminars and masterclasses. Last year the fair had 6,000 exhibiting companies from 62 countries and was attended by 49,000 professionals from 141 countries.
