Basque Country: Minister Mrs. Nerea Melgosa, in the minute of silence on the European Day dedicated to Victims of Terrorism

2024 March 11

Vitoria-Gasteiz (Araba), 2024 03 11

Mrs. Nerea Melgosa, Minister of Equality, Justice, and Social Policies of the Basque Government, participated this morning in the minute of silence that representatives of the Araba institutions dedicated to the victims of all terrorist acts in the New Square in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Today, March 11, European Day in Memory of Victims of Terrorism, marks 20 years since the terrible attacks that cost the lives of 193 people in Madrid.

“If there is a place in Europe that knows the suffering and terror caused by the senselessness of violence, it is the Basque Country (Euskadi). Today, Monday the 11th, is a reference day so that in our country and throughout the Union we reject violence and show the youth that the path of the future is only possible with ethical values, commitment to human rights, democracy, dialogue, respect, and work” indicated Mrs Nerea Melgosa.

“The fight against terrorism is a top priority here and across the EU. Collaboration is essential to prevent terrorist attacks and guarantee the safety of citizens. "It is necessary to detect and prevent radicalization, exchange information, locate and cut off the financing of terrorism, control weapons and their markets, digitalize judicial cooperation, internationally detect the movements of terrorists and raise awareness among the population that the problem belongs to everyone" Nerea Melgosa commented.

The European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism is an annual milestone to commemorate victims of terrorism around the world. On March 11, 2004, bombs that exploded in Madrid claimed the lives of 193 people and injured nearly two thousand. Since 2005, the European Union, with 11M, remembers the victims of terrorist atrocities committed around the world.

The Minister Mrs Nerea Melgosa has referred to the data offered by the European Commission and Europol: "support for victims, including those of terrorist attacks, is an important part of the European Commission's work to address all dimensions of the terrorist threat."
