Barcelona Wine Week 2024 will see a high presence of wineries from the Basque Country, contributing to the showcase of quality wines.

• 48 wineries from the Basque region are participating in this event, which is the first in the Basque Government's calendar of fairs aimed at promoting the Basque agri-food industry.

• For the first time, euskal sagardoa (Basque cider drink) companies are participating as beverages with Denominación de Origen, alongside Rioja Alavesa wines and txakolis (sparkling, dry white wine from the Basque country).

• Once again, this year, the Basque Wine Bar is dedicated to the Basque Country, where personalised attention is given to the presentation of Basque wines.

39 Basque production companies are participating in the fourth Barcelona Wine Week, a fair that has become a benchmark for the wine sector. The event is being held from 5 to 7 February in Barcelona, in collaboration with the Basque Government through HAZI. This year, the number of wineries from the Basque Country in attendance has broken a record, with 11 more brands participating than last year. For the first time, euskal sagardoa companies are participating as beverages with Denominación de Origen, alongside Rioja Alavesa wines and txakolis. In addition to the Euskadi stand, nine other companies are participating in the first wine fair of the year.

This morning, Bittor Oroz, the Basque Government's Deputy Regional Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy, and Raul Perez Iratxeta, the Director of Food Quality and Industries, travelled to Barcelona to support the promotion and internationalisation of Basque beverages by accompanying the Basque wineries. The Department for Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment provides this support.

Barcelona Wine Week is the first event of the year in the food and beverage fairs calendar promoted by the Basque Government. It aims to promote the presence of the Basque agri-food industry and its products in national and international markets.

In 2024, the Basque beverages industry will participate in international trade fairs such as ProWein in Germany, Wine Paris in France, and ProWine Singapore in the Asian market, in addition to the event in Barcelona. The Basque agri-food industry will participate in various trade fairs, including Alimentaria, Gourmets, Seafood, Conxemar, Cibus in Parma, Italy, and SIAL Paris in France.

Quality wines from the Basque Country at BWW

At Barcelona Wine Week, 39 Basque companies are exhibiting their products across three stands. The Rioja Alavesa stand features 21 wineries with the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin. The Txakoli de Euskadi stand showcases 14 wineries producing txakolis with Designation of Origin, including 9 from D.O. Getaria, 3 from D.O. Alava, and 2 from D.O. Bizkaia. For the first time, the euskal sagardoa stand presents 4 wineries.

The Basque Wine Bar, a tasting area for wines under the Basque Wine promotional brand, will open again this year in the space dedicated to the Basque Country. This area is popular with the public and the wines are highlighted individually thanks to personalised and specific attention.

The oenologist Mikel Garaizabal is responsible for tasting and assessing the displayed wines. Visitors interested in any of the wines will be directed to the stand of the respective winery.

Barcelona Wine Week

Barcelona Wine Week has united 952 wineries from 73 Designations of Origin and expects 20,000 trade visitors to attend.

Over 650 major buyers and importers from strategic wine export countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, and China, are participating in the fair's 'Hosted Buyers' programme in collaboration with ICEX.

Barcelona Wine Week's programme features 70 presentations and tastings. More than 160 experts will analyse the imminent challenges of a key sector for the economy.

Basque wineries will be exhibiting at BWW 2024.
