PISA 2022 Report: Basque Country results in mathematical, scientific and reading skills

2023 December 5

In Vitoria-Gasteiz, this morning, the Minister of Education Jokin Bildarratz, and the Deputy Minister Begoña Pedrosa, presented the results of the PISA 2022 Report of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), relating to the Basque Country. The director of ISEI-IVEI (Basque Institute for Educational Evaluation and Research), Eduardo Ubieta, also participated in the presentation.

The tests of the PISA evaluation should have been carried out in spring 2021, but due to the pandemic this happened April 2022, even though the end of the pandemic had not yet been decreed. 3,352 15-year-old students from 96 Basque schools took part.

As the PISA report itself points out, the results of this evaluation provide estimates, because they are obtained from samples of students in each country, not in a census of the entire population and, in addition, a limited set of tasks is used. To establish comparisons, the concept of statistically significant difference is used. This is the reference that serves to interpret whether there are differences or not.

Mathematical competence, was the central skill in PISA 2022:

  • There is an overall drop in the score of virtually all countries and communities in this competition (except Japan and Korea).
  • The Basque Country obtained an estimated average score of 482 in the mathematical competition in PISA 2022.
  • The average of the Basque Country in this competition is above the average of Spain, the OECD and the EU.
  • The academic performance of Basque students is at the same level as that of the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the United Kingdom, Austria, Latvia, Sweden, New Zealand, Lithuania, Germany and France.
  • The Basque Country is in this competition among the countries with greater equity.

Reading competence:

  • There has been a decline in most countries in this competition.
  • The Basque Country has obtained 466 points on average in reading competition, in PISA 2022.
  • The Basque Country has a score similar to Spain and the EU, which falls with respect to the OECD.
  • The Basque Country is on the same average performance as countries such as the Netherlands, Portugal, Norway, Israel, France, Croatia and Latvia.

Scientific competence:

  • As in the reading competition, the Basque Country shows behaviour and scores similar to Spain, the OECD and the EU, with differences that are not significant.
  • The Basque Country obtained 480 points on average in the scientific competition in PISA 2022.
  • The Basque Country is, in this competition, at the same average performance as the Netherlands, Croatia, Norway, France, Italy and Lithuania.

Estaremos por encima de la media, pero no es como para estar satisfechos. SEAMOS SERIOS.
No hablamos del descenso en picado que sufrimos desde el 2015 (que no todo es culpa de la pandemia) tal como se puede apreciar en las gráficas de:
