  • This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Right.

President Iñigo Urkullu and Nerea Melgosa, Minister of Equality, Justice and Social Policies, have presented the René Cassin 2023 Award to the International Commission Against the Death Penalty, ICDP. In a ceremony held at the Villa Suso Palace in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the Commissioner Marta Santos Pais, former Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations on Violence against Children, was in charge of receiving the award.

“In the current global context of violation, threat and risk, we make the cause of the defence of Human Rights our own. We embrace the humanist values represented by the people and organisations that have been awarded the René Cassin Prize for the past 20 years. We embrace the principles that inspire the work of the International Commission against the Death Penalty,” stressed the President.

For her part, the president of the International Commission against the Death Penalty, Navi Pillay, former United Nations High Commissioner, sent a video of thanks in which she stressed that “this important recognition will strengthen us to continue participating in discussions with government authorities around the world, especially those governments that still maintain the death penalty, with the ultimate goal of achieving a world free of the death penalty.”

“This award comes at an opportune time, as one of its contributions, the promotion of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is now 75 years old," Pillay herself recalled. Yesterday was the commemoration of the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights signed on December 10, 1947, of which René Cassin was one of the main promoters.

This award, which bears the name of “a universal Basque” symbolizes, said the President, “the Basque Country's commitment to human rights.” “Today, on the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we go further, we not only claim the right to life of human beings, but also loudly, the right for that life to be dignified.”

The Minister for Equality, Justice and Social Policies, Nerea Melgosa, highlighted that “human rights are not a theoretical, ethereal and intangible corpus. They translate into rights linked to our daily lives, to our dignity as persons, to our well-being and the quality of life, our own and that of humanity. Human rights are universal rights and, because they are universal, they are also rights of proximity.”

The Basque Government will award the 2023 René Cassin Prize to the International Commission Against the Death Penalty (ICDP) “for its tireless fight for the abolition of the death penalty in all countries and regions of the world.”

“Through awareness-raising, research, policy advocacy, technical assistance to States and cooperation with the United Nations, ICDP works persistently to prevent executions, eliminate unjust and arbitrary practices, develop alternatives to the death penalty and promote fairer and more humane penal systems,” the jury said.
