The Basque Government unveils Moveuskadi.com, the public transport route planner for the Basque Country
The portal is up and running as of today
The Basque Government's Minister for Housing, Public Works and Transport, Iñaki Arriola, has today unveiled Moveuskadi.com, the new tool to plan public transport journeys in the Basque Countrythat has been developed by the Basque Government in conjunction with the Provincial Councils and municipalities including Bilbao, San Sebastián, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Extebarria, and the operators.
The portal contains information from 34 operators, which means over 4,000 stops and 450 transport lines in Álava, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia.
At Moveuskadi, you can find information on timetables, stops, length and cost of the journey, by any means of transport, separately or when using more than one, covering the underground, tramways, bus and coaches, long distance and suburban trains, boats, ferries, funicular railways, the transporter bridge and even lifts.
It is a ground-breaking tool in Spain and it seeks to combine the endeavours of the different institutions and operators to help to make life easier for Basque citizens overall. In the same way that you go online to plan a long-distance trip, you will just need one click with this new tool to plan your route in detail within the Autonomous Community.
On 16 March, Gipuzkoa Transport Authority unveiled the Mugipuzkoa portal, the first step towards this website and which could be used to plan journeys within the Donostia-Irun-Hondarribia corridor, the Andoain-Donosita Corridor, Tolosaldea, Goierri-Alto Urola, Bajo Deba, Debagoiena and Urola.
The Basque Government, in conjunction with the Provincial Councils and the operators, has now got Moveuskadi up and running. The tool was developed by I2MApp using the SAAS (Software as a service) system or cloud computing, and it is a software distribution model that provides online access (usually Internet) to the tool without needing to maintain applications, or carry out technical or support operations. This model combines software and the service, and saves on server maintenance. This tool is also updated automatically and new operators and services will be added.
This initiative is part of the actions that the Basque Government is carrying out to achieve more sustainable mobility. Along with an infrastructure policy aimed at fostering the use of more sustainable means of transport, such as by rail, one of the areas that the Public Administrations are prioritising is to ensure that the citizens are aware of and have information about the existing public transport services. The aim is to achieve a more sustainable means of transport as an alternative to the private vehicle. The alternative has to be more attractive, user-friendly, convenient, efficient and quick, and having the backing of inter-institutional consensus and of all the stakeholders involved.
The Basque Country is therefore at the cutting-edge of the development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), thus showcasing the innovative and entrepreneurship nature of the Basque Country worldwide. Moveuskadi is a tool for mobility, sustainability, facility and the future.
The Basque Government's Transport Minister, Iñaki Arriola, the Álava Provincial Councillor for Public Works and Transport, Alicia Ruiz de Infante, the Provincial Councillor of the Department of Infrastructures and Mobility, Larraitz Ugarte, the I2MApp technical development manager, Ray Fernández, and the Google representative, Christine Ross (Srategic Partner Manager) were at the presentation.
