A hundred Basque organizations and companies are registered for the European Environmental Management System EMAS
- They belong to 14 sectors and account for 2.2% of total registrations in Europe
- The manufacturing industry and public administration account for 37% of registrations
- In Europe there are 4,039 organizations registered in the EMAS system
In an act of public recognition, Arantxa Tapia, Basque Government Minister for Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, today met with the hundreds of organisations in the Basque Country that have the EMAS environmental management system promoted by the European Union, in order to thank them for their commitment to the sustainability of the Basque Country. The event was held at the Maritime Museum of Bilbao.
After assessing the effort it takes for any organisation to accredit an environmental management system such as EMAS, Minister Tapia stressed that “contrary to common belief, sustainability and economic growth are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are complementary. EMAS organisations are proving that it is possible to prosper economically while taking care of the planet and the environment. Investments in sustainability not only protect the environment, but also generate employment and stimulate innovation.”
Currently in the EMAS registry of the Basque Country, managed by the Deputy Ministry of Environmental Sustainability, there are 99 organizations registered, which represents 2.2% of the total EMAS registrations in Europe (4,039 as of June 2023). The hundred organisations registered in the Basque Country belong to 14 different sectors. Specifically, the manufacturing industry and public administration account for 37% of registrations.
After the intervention of the minister, three organisations from different sectors — industry, education and health — have shared the benefits of integrating a system of these characteristics in their management. These have been: Construcciones Sukia, a company in the sector that promotes and constructs housing in the Basque Country located in Donostia; Fundación Diocesanas – Jesús Obrero Fundazioa, centre for Secondary Education, Baccalaureate and Vocational Training, located in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and the OSI of Ezkerraldea-Enkarterri-Cruces, a health services organisation belonging to the Osakidetza network.
About EMAS
The EMAS system (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is a management tool developed by the European Union that accredits and identifies those organisations that have implemented an environmental management system with a commitment to continuous improvement, verified through independent audits.
EMAS-registered organisations are committed to assessing, managing and improving their environmental performance, leading to improved performance, credibility and transparency of the registered organisations themselves. The EMAS system also responds to three key management challenges faced by organisations of all kinds: resource efficiency, climate change and corporate social responsibility.
