2023 July 3

The Basque Country will host a meeting of the Conference of Maritime and Peripheral Regions (CPMR), which will be held this coming Thursday at the Delegation of the Basque Government in Brussels. A high-level event on EU investment policies after 2027, convened under the title “Boosting EU investment instruments to accelerate economic, social and territorial development”, and which will be attended by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Pedro Azpiazu, and Peter Berkowitz, Director of Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission, among other speakers.

The CPMR acts as a think tank, bringing together more than 160 regions from 24 EU and non-EU states, representing nearly 200 million people. One of its objectives is to advocate for a more balanced development of the European territory. The Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, is chairing the CPMR Atlantic Arc Commission between 2022 and 2024.

At the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) – of which the Basque Country forms part – the future of cohesion policy within the framework of the European Union will be discussed. During this forum, the Basque Country will focus on rethinking the contents of the cohesion policy, within the framework of the triple transition in which Europe is immersed: digital, environmental and social. Azpiazu will also raise the possibility of creating areas of convergence between the various existing European funding mechanisms in order to optimize resources and focus their use on the achievement of the challenges - present and future - posed.

Along with Azpiazu, this seminar will be attended by a representation of the Department of Economy and Finance, with the Deputy Minister of Economy and European Funds, Iñaki Barredo; the head of Cabinet and Coordination; Yurdana Burgoa; the director of Cohesion Policy and European Funds, Juan Alberdi; the director of Economy and Planning, Alberto Ansuategi, as well as Marta Marín, delegate of the Basque Country for the EU.

Recovery and Resilience Mechanism – MRR -

Taking advantage of this trip to Brussels, the Minister of Economy and Finance will meet on Thursday with the director of the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism at the General Secretariat of the European Commission, María Teresa Fábregas.

In this meeting, Azpiazu will inform her about the vision that the Basque Country is proposing regarding the use of the European MMR funds, as well as the proposals of the Basque Government to expedite the management of them, always within the parameters set by Europe.

Likewise, he will give an account of the actions of the Government to mobilize private actors, mainly companies, in the collection and use of all the funds, knowing that 2023 is a key year and a good part of the funds have to be committed by December.

Likewise, the Minister will transfer the value proposals that the Basque Government has made to the Spanish State to try to improve the deployment of resources.
