The Lehendakari inaugurates the Press Centre and Permanent Office of the Tour de France

2023 June 28

Iñigo Urkullu, Lehendakari of the Basque Government, and Christian Prudhomme, CEO of the Tour de France, today inaugurated the Press Centre and Permanent Office of the Tour de France, located in the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (Barakaldo).

The event was also attended by Bingen Zupiria, Minister of Culture and Language Policy and Spokesperson of the Basque Government; Elixabete Etxanobe, Deputy for Public Administration and Institutional Relations of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia; Ainara Basurko, Deputy for Economic Promotion of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia; Juan Mari Aburto, Mayor of Bilbao; Xabier Ochandiano, Councillor for Economic Development, Trade and Employment of the City Council of Bilbao, and Amaia del Campo, Mayor of Barakaldo.

From 28 June to 30 June, the BEC will become the logistics and press centre for the 2023 Tour de France. The race organisers have installed its offices in the Convention Centre, as well as a space created especially for the hundreds of media personnel that will cover the Grand Départ Pays Basque 2023.

Access to this space is restricted to people with accreditation, it is not publicly accessible. Inside, spaces have been set up so that the race organisers can respond to all logistics needs: distribution of accreditations and materials to cycling teams, journalists, staff of the advertising caravan etc.

There are also spaces for about 100 meetings and business meetings, with large rooms named after great cyclists such as Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain, Jacques Anquetil and Raymond Poulidor.

Great infrastructure and high impact

Some of the data that give a good example of the infrastructure that the gala hauls around with it ,is the 4,500 people who move between the organisers, teams, security, media, sponsors, collaborators etc. Some 1,800 television, radio and press journalists have been accredited, belonging to more than 600 media outlets. They are professionals who have permanent accreditation or will only attend certain stages.

Every day, 180 trucks are needed to transport the materials that are needed to make up the logistics of the race. Added to this are the 150 vehicles of the advertising caravan. The parade that precedes the race is 10 kilometres long and lasts about 30 minutes. Almost 500 cheerleaders take part, there are 55 people in charge of monitoring them and 120 people are responsible for logistics and mechanics.

Disseminating the race at the international level has to be consistent. The race is broadcast in 190 countries. About 100 channels rebroadcast the race, 60 of them live. In 2022 it enjoyed close to 150 million viewers in Europe. And in this same continent 715 million live hours could be seen.

On social media channels, the scope of the Tour is also impressive. With more than 10 million followers on its social networks, last year its videos had more than 172 million views. In 2022, 17,600,000 unique visits to the official website were recorded, while total visits reached 51 million. It is an increasingly widespread way of viewing, the official application channel registered 21 million entries.
