28 wineries from the Basque Country participate with the Basque Government in Barcelona Wine Week

2023 February 6

The Rioja Alavesa stand hosts 18 Basque wineries producing wine with D.O.Ca. Rioja and the Txakoli de Euskadi stand brings together 10 companies producing Txakolis with D.O. Getaria, Bizkaia and Araba.

• This edition will once again feature the Basque Wine Bar, the exhibition and tasting space for wines under the Basque Wine promotional brand.

Today saw the start of the third edition of Barcelona Wine Week, a leading trade fair for the wine sector that brings together thousands of professionals and international buyers of quality wine for three days in Barcelona.

In this edition of BWW there has been a notable increase in the presence of wineries from the Basque Country participating with the Basque Government, compared to the previous edition, with a total of 28 Basque producers distributed in two stands: Rioja Alavesa and Txakoli de Euskadi. The Rioja Alavesa stand has 18 wineries with the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin; and the Txakoli de Euskadi stand has 10 wineries producing txakoli with Designation of Origin (5 from D.O. Getaria, 3 from D.O. Alava and 2 from D.O. Bizkaia).

Together with these wineries, the Basque Government's Director of Food Quality and Industries, Raul Perez Iracheta, travelled to Barcelona as a demonstration of the support for the food industry and the commitment to the international promotion of Basque food and beverages made by the Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment in collaboration with the HAZI Foundation.

Specific Basque Wine tastings

This year, the space dedicated to Euskadi will once again feature the Basque Wine Bar, an exhibition and tasting area for wines under the Basque Wine promotional brand, which last year was very well attended and proved very interesting for Basque wineries, thanks to the personalised and specific attention offered in this space, which showcases the wines one by one.

The oenologist Mikel Garaizabal will be in charge of tasting the wines on display in this space, together with an explanation and advice about them. Visitors who show interest in any of the wines will be invited to the stand where the producing winery is located.

BWW is consolidated as a benchmark event for the wine sector

With three editions under its belt, Barcelona Wine Week has established itself as the sector's benchmark event for national and international buyers of quality wine with a record edition: 828 exhibiting wineries, 70 prestigious labels represented and the presence of major firms.

BWW is a great business and networking forum that brings together thousands of professionals and buyers from large distribution groups, prestigious importers, wholesale centres, specialised distributors, retailers and gourmet shops. To this end, around 1,800 key wine buyers have been invited, from Spain and other important export markets such as the United States, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Belgium, China, Brazil and Japan.

Also attending are representatives of all the major distribution groups as well as hotel chains, large organised catering groups and restaurants. In total, more than 8,000 business meetings will take place between exhibitors and professional buyers.
