Green Spain takes stock of its actions in Europe and America

2022 December 22
  • Asturias has coordinated the actions of the interregional agreement in 2022, which has obtained European funding for the implementation of the largest ecotourism corridor in Europe.
  • Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, the United States and Brazil have been the focus of this year’s actions.

This morning, Oviedo hosted the last annual meeting of Green Spain, the territorial brand in which Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country are working together to position the Cantabrian coast as a destination abroad. At the meeting, chaired by the Deputy Minister of Tourism of Asturias, Graciela Blanco, as coordinator of the brand in 2022, institutional and technical representatives of the four communities have taken stock of the work done this year in various European and American markets.

The main project this year has been the design of the Green Spain Ecotourism Corridor, a pioneering initiative in Europe that will be launched in 2023 thanks to the “Experiences Tourism Spain” programme, included in the Next Generation EU funds, which will provide 98 % of the total investment of the project, estimated at €954,073.

In addition, the brand has worked on the second phase of the strategic plan for the “Green Spain, the spirit of the north” brand, which has included campaigns in newspapers, magazines, supplements and digital media in Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Italy, as well as an intensification of its social media strategy. As such, reports in media such as Lonely Planet, Le Parisien or the Daily Mail have served as a support to promote the values and visitable resources of the Cantabrian communities.

These resources are also present in “The great Green Spain route”, which has been designed to travel along the coast following secondary roads. Ecotourism, surfing and the Camino de Santiago have been the products most worked on during a year in which there has also been collaboration with the media and travel agencies in long-distance markets such as Brazil and the United States.

The Vice-Minister of Tourism has positively assessed a plan that has exceeded the €400,000 of investment planned: “The good budget execution shows the commitment of the four communities and our firm commitment to a joint promotion that seduces international tourists with ‘the spirit of the North’”.

Green Spain

Green Spain is the territorial brand launched in 1989 by Galicia, the Principality of Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country, with the support of Turespaña, whose aim is to position the Cantabrian coast as an alternative tourist destination in the international market, reinforcing its brand image and promoting itself as a unique destination. Green Spain is the national leader in nature with 14 UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, 25 natural parks, almost 2,000 kilometres of coastline and 2,800 rural accommodations.
