Basque Youth Observatory: the youth unemployment rate between 16 and 29 years of age stabilizes below 15%

2022 July 26
  • Objective of the Youth Plan of the Basque Government

In the second quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate of youth aged 16 to 29 in the Basque Country was 14.8% and maintained its downward trend since the third quarter of 2020 -when it reached 23.9%- and it´s below 15%, the target of the Basque Government's Youth Plan.

These data come from the Survey of Population in Relation to Activity (PRA) corresponding to the second quarter of 2022. The PRA prepared quarterly by the Basque Institute of Statistics (EUSTAT), which provides the Basque Youth Observatory with data relating to the population from 16 to 29 years old.

The unemployment rate indicates the percentage of active people (willing to work) who do not have a job, but are actively looking for one and have carried out some form of job search in the last four weeks. It does not include students who are not looking for work or people with disabilities who cannot work.

Analysing the quarterly unemployment rate from the first quarter of 2020, it reached its highest peak in the third quarter of that same year, with 23.9%. From there, the rate has gradually decreased to 14.6% in the first quarter of 2022 and 14.8% in this second quarter. Comparing the unemployment rates for the second quarter of 2020, 2021 and 2022 for men and women, it can see that the decrease has been very high in both cases.

In the second quarter of 2020, the unemployment rate for men aged 16 to 29 was 24.8% and fell to 14.1% in the second quarter of 2022. Among women, the decline was not as strong, although it is important; the unemployment rate for the second quarter has gone from 20.2% in 2020 to 15.8% in 2022.
