The Lehendakari announces that ETA is “completely alone” and demands that the organisation declare its “definitive dissolution”

2011 October 17

Mr López has expressed his complete satisfaction that no one remains, “either within or outside the Basque Country” who has not called for an end to ETA

The Lehendakari, Patxi López, called on each person “to assume the responsibility with which they are charged” following the statement issued in the International Conference celebrated in San Sebastián. Mr López, who is currently on a business trip to the U.S.A., classified the statement as “good news”, but affirmed that bringing an end to terrorism will not be achieved by “a single conference held on a particular day” but rather “the effort of thousands of Basque citizens who have remained steadfast and refused to bow before the demands of terrorism”. Mr López recognised “all individuals who have defended liberty and democracy”, expressly thanking the victims of terrorism for their “moral example” in the fight against ETA. “I reaffirm my commitment to vindicate their memory because it is the guarantee that this will not occur again”, he added. The Lehendakari directly addressed ETA to demand that they recognise that they are “completely alone” and to call on them to declare their “definitive dissolution”.

The Lehendakari believes that the most important part of the statement is the verification that now no one remains, “either within or outside the Basque Country” who has not called for an end to the terrorist activities of ETA. He also reaffirmed his commitment to the “manifest” he presented before the Basque Parliament in order to instil a new harmony amongst Basque citizens and overcome the cycle of terrorism. "I reaffirm the points of this proposal, which, in short, represent a commtment to liberty and living together in harmony". (see adjoined document)

In an official statement issued in New York, the Lehendakari affirmed that the Basque conflict has a name, “linked to violence and threats, and that name is ETA”, but finally, “we are entering a new era in the Basque Country”. “Democracy and liberty have triumphed in the Basque Country”, he declared.

In conclusion, the Lehendakari affirmed that point 4 of the statement issued in the International Conference is more concerned with “the needs of the organisers than the needs of Basque society”.
