Donostia will be the 2016 European Capital of Culture
An international jury has decided that San Sebastián - Donostia will act as the 2016 European Capital of Culture
San Sebastián - Donostia has finished ahead of Zaragoza, Cordoba, Burgos, Segovia and Las Palmas and in 2016 will share the title of Cultural Capital with the Polish city of Wroclaw. The Lehendakari, Patxi López, shortly after becoming aware of the jury's decision, congratulated "all citizens of Donostia" and "Basque society as a whole", affirming that this is "an achievement resulting from the efforts of everyone."
The Lehendakari, Patxi López, recognised the efforts of the technical heads of the project, as it took many months of work to draw up an "excellent, attractive and imaginative project" that, today, has received its "just reward".
When offering congratulations, the Lehendakari did not forget Odón Elorza, who he descried as the "main driving force and proponent of this candidacy". Mr López affirmed that Elorza has strived towards an "initiative in which he believed from the outset," upon exiting his position as mayor.
"Following years in which the only news relating to the Basque Country was negative...today we project an image of an open, innovative and hospitable region," Patxi López affirmed. The Basque Country "has overcome its divisions and is making firm advances towards modernity," he concluded.
