2010 November 24

The President of the Committee of the Regions, Mercedes Bresso, has also called on the Basque Country to organise the European Summit on Subsidiarity in March

This morning, the Lehendakari, Patxi López, held a meeting with the President of the Committee of the Regions, Mercedes Bresso in the Palace of Ajuria Enea, informing her of his vision of the role of the regions within European decision-making and the need to establish true multi-level governance and create work networks involving the various agents to defend the interests of the Basque Country in the EU. In the press conference following the meeting, the Lehendakari informed those in attendance that the Basque Country will be charged with the task of drawing up the European address on the new industrial policy for cities and regions in the 21st century, which will be the subject of debate in the Committee of the Regions. The President of the Committee of the Regions, Mercedes Bresso, also charged the Basque Country with the task of organising the 2011 European Summit on Subsidiarity, "a basic principle for the development of the regions" in the view of the Lehendakari, who affirmed that these developments once again place the Basque Country in a "pre-eminent" position within Europe. Bresso encouraged the Lehendakari to transfer the concept of Metropolis of talent, under development in the Basque Country, to the European stage.

The Basque Country will be charged with the task of drawing up the address for the new European industrial policy for cities and regions in the 21st century. This decision was brought to light during the meeting that took place this morning between the Lehendakari, Patxi López, and the President of the Committee of Regions, Mercedes Bresso, in the Palace of Ajuria Enea. The meeting also served to confirm that the Basque Country will undertake the task of organising the 2011 European Summit on Subsidiarity, a concept that the Lehendakari has defined as "fundamental" to the development of European regions, once again placing the Basque Country in a "pre-eminent" position within Europe.

The meeting between the Lehendakari, Patxi López, and the President of the Committee of Regions, Mercedes Bresso, took place this morning in the Palace of Ajuria Enea.

The meeting enabled the Lehendakari to inform the President of the Committee of Regions of the Basque Country's stance in relation to the various matters under discussion. Amongst other considerations, the Lehendakari explained that the 2020 Strategy will prove "more efficient and boast greater potential" with the "direct participation" of regions such as the Basque Country. In this sense, Mr López put forward the Basque Country as a "valid interlocutor" in the forthcoming European negotiations on budgets and cohesion funds to ensure that "regions such as the Basque Country, which act as driving forces, are not marginalised within the budgets."

In addition, the Lehendakari voiced the need to include concepts above and beyond maritime concepts within the Atlantic Strategy and to design a comprehensive strategy that includes economic and environmental concepts.

The Lehendakari stressed the importance of the concept of subsidiarity as a "fundamental principle for the development of the regions." The President of the Committee of the Regions has charged the Basque Country with the task of organising the 2011 European Summit on Subsidiarity in March.

In addition, the President of the Committee of the Regions encouraged the Lehendakari to transfer the concept of Metropolis of talent, which the Basque Government is developing, to the European stage.
The Basque Country has introduced 100 amendments to the various relevant regulations under debate in the EU, entailing decisions that will directly affect the Basque Country and its citizens.
