The Basque railway operator, Euskotren, has been invited by the International Union of Railways-UIC to talk, at the 13th Sustainability Conference running from 12th October in Vienna, about the interoperability of the BAT, BARIK and MUGI passes for travel in any territory on the trains, tramways and funicular railways run by the company in the Basque Country. The heads of Euskotren will also give details of collaboration agreements in the Euroregión Nouvelle Aquitaine-Euskadi in regard to combined public transport.
“As part of the “door to door solutions” workshop, Euskotren will present the interoperability of the three passes, which are now a vector facilitating the combined use of different modes of transport from origin to destination, yet all with one single method of payment. According to Imanol Leza, director of Euskotren, “Several international operators are interested in our formula”.
“Although transport pass use is common in Europe, being a field in which new technology solutions, the incorporation of new modes and rate integration is expected to develop exponentially in the future, the case of the Basque Country, where the passes can be used outside the territory for which they were initially intended (Bizkaia, Araba or Gipuzkoa) and throughout the entire Autonomous Community, is awakening interest in other places with similar problems” added the director of Euskotren.
