The Basque Country, a reference point within initiatives to harness the energy of the oceans

2010 October 5

The energy of the sea represents innovation and economic development. The rapid pace of technological evolution is laying the foundations of an emerging industrial sector in Europe.

Within the framework of the Semana de las Olas (Week of Waves), Sopelana will host a surfing "Expression Session", providing a meeting point in which technologists and surfers can share ideas and reflections on the sea and energy.

The director of Basquetour, Ana Izaguirre, and the director of EVE, José Ignacio Hormaeche, today participated in the surfing "Expression Session" in Sopelana, within the framework of the celebration of the third edition of the International Conference on Ocean Energy (ICOE).

The foremost international experts in marine energy and leading companies in the development of this renewable resource are in Bilbao to take part in the congress, the world's most important event in relation to harnessing ocean energy.

The marine resource presents enormous mid and long-tem potential with regards to electricity supply, the reduction of CO2 emissions and the configuration of a strong industrial sector. Taking advantage of this scientific event focusing on wave energy, the Ente Vasco de la Energía (Basque Energy Agency - EVE) has sponsored a surfing "Expression Session" in Sopelana, where technologists, surfers and aficionados of this sport will come together to share ideas and reflections in relation to the sea, the energy it is capable of generating and the uses to which this energy might be put. Up until the 8th of October, the Bilbao Exhibition Centre will receive delegations from countries throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, China and New Zealand.
