The Basque Country, world leader in marine energy
During the press conference, José Ignacio Hormaeche reaffirmed the Basque Country's position as a leader in the field of marine energy. He went on to explain that the choice of Bilbao as the host city for ICOE 2010 has served to highlight the importance of all of the marine energy initiatives that are currently under way in the Basque Country. Specifically, he made reference to the Mutriku and Armintza projects, both implemented by EVE.
He told those present how the Mutriku facility will, via the power of the waves, generate enough energy each year to meet the needs of 600 people. The Bimep platform, to be positioned in front of the port of Armintza, in Lemoiz, will boast a research centre that will transform Lemoiz into a world reference point for marine energy research.
Surf in the Basque Country and the Expression Session
During her address, the Director of BasqueTour presented a new tourism product that is being developed by the Department of Tourism: Surf in the Basque Country. She stated that the Basque Country aims to promote surf tourism, taking advantage of the world-renowned quality of our waves. Izaguirre pointed out that, each year, these waves attract approximately 20,000 visitors, providing employment for around 600 people.
During the press conference it was also explained that, as part of ICOE 2010, a surfing "Expression Session" would be held in the town of Sopelana, giving technologists and surfers a chance to meet and share ideas and points of view on the sea and energy.
