Retail trade sector sales rose by 1.8% in the Basque Country in the second quarter of 2010

The retail trade sector of the Basque Country registered a 1.8% rise in nominal sales in the second quarter of 2010 with regard to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.


The sector's sales, not including service stations, were up by 0.1% with respect to the same quarter of the previous year.


With respect to the previous quarter, the sales index fell by a nominal 1.0%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.

By sectors, specialist retail trade increased its nominal sales by 3.5% in the second quarter of 2010, while non-specialist retail trade fell by 2.0% with respect to the same period of 2009.


Within specialist retail trade, the performance of the Other Consumer Goods sector was particularly noteworthy as it posted nominal growth of 8.0%. The sales of Household Equipment products also grew by 6.8%, but the sales of Personal Equipment sector dropped by 1.9% and sales of food products fell by 0.4%.


By Provinces, the highest growth in retail sector nominal sales, in the second quarter of 2010, was in Gipuzkoa, with a 3.9% year-on-year increase. Álava increased its nominal saes by 1.8% and Bizkaia by 0.4%.

In constant prices, that is, without the price effect, retail trade sales rose by 0.2% in the second quarter


Retail trade sales, without including service stations, did not fluctuate with respect to the previous year (0.0%).


In the second quarter of 2010, there was a 1.5% drop in real retail trade sales of the Basque Country, with respect to the first quarter of 2010, once adjusted for seasonal effects.


The real increase was 0.8% in the case of specialist retail trade, while non-specialist retail trade fell by 2.4% with respect to the same quarter of 2009.


Within the specialist retail trade sector, the year-on-year performance was positive in the Household Equipment sector where sales grew by 6.0%. Sales of Food Products fell by 0.7%, Personal Equipment also fell by 0.7% and Other Consumer Goods were down by 0.4%, all in real terms.


As far as non-specialist retail trade was concerned, year-on-year sales of the food sub-sectors fell by 2.7%, while those coming under Other Products were down by 0.5%, in constant euros.


The province of Gipuzkoa posted positive increases in real terms and was up by 1.7%, while the real sales in Álava and Bizkaia fell by 1.8% and 1.0%, respectively.


The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country overall in the second quarter of 2010 was up by 0.1% on the previous quarter.
