The prestigious World Cheese Awards to be hosted in Donostia-San Sebastián in 2016

2015 September 30

The most important cheese contest in the world will next be held in Donostia-San Sebastián from 15-18 November 2016, as part of the Euskadi - Basque Country International Cheese Festival.

It is the first time that the contest   will be taken outside the United Kingdom, where it has been held since 1897. The organisation of the event will be entrusted to the Artzai Gazta association, in conjunction with the Basque Government.

This festival is going to attract the cream of the world of cheese and will feature 3,000 cheeses from 40 countries.   The capital of Gipukzoa will thus become a showcase to turn the spotlight on a clearly export-oriented industry and a world recognised culture and culinary heritage.

During the presentation of the WCA 2016, the Basque Government’s Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy, Bittor Oroz, stressed that festival will also highlight the work of the Basque sheep-rearing sector,  when he explained that “this event has to recognise our shepherds, the sheep-rearing sector, and  the primary sector of the Basque Country, as this event provides us with the opportunity to showcase our first-rate products to the world and turn the spotlight on the daily work of our producers":
