Bilbao hosts the business and scientific community to boost the European Neutron Source project

2015 April 16

ESS Bilbao, a public institution whose mission is to contribute to what will be the largest European Spallation Source located in Lund (Sweden), has organised a session to galvanise companies to get involved in this project.

The ESS Industry Day is being held at the Main Assembly Room of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Bilbao and the participants include the Basque Government, an ESS Bilbao member, represented by Minister Cristina UPV, the Spanish Government, represented by the Secretary of State for R&D&I, Carmen Vela, along with the ESS Bilbao Executive Director, José Luis Martínez, and the ESS General Manager, James Yeck.

The Basque Government’s Minister for Education, Linguistic Policy and Culture, Cristina Uriarte, stressed the importance of Basque industries and companies being involved in the construction of the Neutron Source. Uriarte stressed that “ESS Bilbao is a hard and fast reality" that will help to develop the scientific-technological community in the Basque Country "resulting in jobs for Basque companies and scientists in a field with a promising future as is the case for the area of accelerators".

As the Minister explained, over 50 companies and organisations are at this session in order to explore new partnerships between ESS and the Basque industrial sector.  ESS Industry Day was set up with the aim of showcasing the scale of one of the most important scientific projects in Europe over the coming decades, stressed Uriarte.

What is ESS Bilbao?

ESS Bilbao is a consortium whose equal shareholders are the Basque  Government and the Spanish Government.  These two authorities have earmarked a budget of 90 million euros for ESS Bilbao to embark on an important scientific-technological and viable project until 2025. ESS Bilbao is thus part of the ESS network tasked with constructing the Neutron Source in Lund (Sweden).

ESS Bilbao is, therefore, a leading international strategic Neutron Technologies Centre that contributes technology and value added to the European neutron source project.
