2nd Technical Conference of the Basque Birding Network: progress in ornithological ecotourism
The 2nd Technical Conference of the Basque Birding Network was held this morning in the Ekoetxea Interpretation Centre in the Plaiaundi Ecological Park in Txingudi Bay. Aimed at specialists and professionals involved in tourism and ornithology, this event was used to explore a number of initiatives relating to ornithology tourism and to examine the different birdwatching routes included in the network.
So participants were able to learn about the ‘Route of the Geese' project, a trans-European nature tourism experience which spans a series of wetlands on the migration route taken by birds from Finland to Doñana, with the participation of the Urdaibai Reserve. Regarding the Basque Birding Network, a project in which Basquetour and the Hazi Foundation are involved, recommendations were shared on new opportunities to strengthen it. They also looked at the different routes offered by the network to enjoy birdwatching in the most exceptional settings; a different way of discovering the Basque Country by exploring its ornithological resources.
The Basque Birding project was launched in 2008 with the aim of creating a tourism product which guaranteed the conservation of birds and their habitats while, at the same time, promoting the social and economic development of areas with a high natural value.
