The Basque Government attends the laying of the cornerstone of the future Spallation Source Centre in Lund (Sweden)

2014 September 2

The Deputy Ministers for University & Research and for Technology, Innovation & Competitiveness of the Basque Government, Itziar Alkorta and Estíbaliz Hernáez, took part in the official ceremony to lay the cornerstone of the future European Spallation Source Centre in the Swedish city of Lund.

This research centre will become a major knowledge infrastructure serving European science and 17 European countries apart from the Basque Government will be involved in its construction. The building work will take approximately 11 years and will cost a total of 1843 million euros.

The Basque Government, through the ESS Bilbao consortium whose equal shareholders are the Basque Government and the Spanish Government, will be involved in the construction of this major European project through its Zamudio centre.  The centre has a staff of 50, most of whom are engineers and physicists and 30% of whom hold PhDs.

Since 2009, ESS Bilbao has been working with ESS Lund to design this future infrastructure. Both authorities are currently negotiating the signing of the work packets for the construction project with the Swedish headquarters.
