BCAM joins the ranks of the Severo Ochoa for centres of excellence
The Basque Government's Minister for Education, Linguistic Policy and Culture is delighted with the recognition attained by the BCAM, the Basque Excellence Research Center in Applied Mathematics
This morning, its accreditation as a Severo Ochoa Centre or Unit of Excellence was announced today. It is a state programme that seeks to foster research excellence-based any of the fields of science. The accreditation has a four-year validity and during that period, the centre will receive an annual grant of one million euros to support its scientific work. Special mention should be made of the decisive contribution of the University of the Basque Country in the attainment of this recognition.
The Severo Ochoa programme is aimed at those existing centres and units involved in and carrying out cutting-edge basic research and are among the world's best in their respective areas. The impact and international scientific leadership of these centres and units is essential for their recognition.
The evaluation and selection is carried out by an independent scientific committee consisting of internationally renowned scientists.
The BCAM is a centre promoted by the Basque Government and whose board includes Ikerbasque, the University of the Basque Country -UPV/EHU, Innobasque and Bizkaia Provincial Council. Headed by Luis Vega – Euskadi Research Award 2013 and senior professor of mathematics at the UPV/EHU -, the centre belongs to the Basque Excellence Research Centres (BERC). Knowledge generation structures funded by the Basque Government, they are underpinned by a research group that is an international benchmark and is noted for its novelty within the Basque Science and Technology System and for its research excellence.
There are currently 9 such centres: Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia – Bizkaia Biophysics Foundation, DIPC, Basque Center of Climatic Change, BCAM ,Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language, Materials Physics Center, Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience , BCMaterials, Basque Center for Materials, Applications & Nanostructure, POLYMAT Fundazioa, Basque Center for Macromolecular Design and Engineering.
Other key entities in the Severo Ochoa excellence programme include: Centre for Genomic Regulation, Doñana Biological Station, Institute of Photonic Sciences, Spanish National Cancer Research Centre, The Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute.
