A.Tapia: "the energy sector will help the economy to recover and create jobs"

Commissioners Geoghegan-Quinn and Oettinger acknowledged the potential of the R&D and energy policies driven by the Basque Government.

The Minister for Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Basque Government, Arantza Tapia, met this afternoon with the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, and with the European Commissioner for Energy, Günther Oettinger, in order to share with the European officials the analysis of the energy and R&D&i policies in the Basque Country, and outline the policy directives being driven by the Basque Government in these areas.

At the seat of the European Commission, Arantza Tapia outlined the objectives of the Basque Government to position the Basque Country as a European benchmark in Smart Specialisation and to be the standard-bearer for the Offshore project in the field of marine energy to help enhance competitiveness, kick-start the economy and create jobs.

Both European leaders validated this strategy and acknowledged to the Minister the sustained commitment to R&D&I in the Basque Country.

Offshore with the support of Madrid and Brussels

Tapia informed Günther Oettinger of her decision to diversify the energy policy and thus announced that the Basque Government, with the approval of the Spanish Ministry for Industry and Energy, is working on designing a project where different Basque companies can develop technology platforms to install an experimental turbine offshore to generate marine energy.

"The Basque Country has sufficient members and companies with high value added to be able to position itself in offshore specialisation and from there help to generate a new employment, business and activity niche."

This project, led by the Basque Government and still at an early stage, is being touted with local private companies and even though no specific one has signed up so far, the project has aroused great interest among the trail-blazing companies in the energy sector.

The commitment to this project is part of the Smart Specialisation strategy which was the topic of part of the meeting previously held by Minister Tapia with Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn and Arantza Tapia discussed the analysis of the R&D&I policies implemented in the Basque Country and they agreed on the need to continue focusing as far as possible on the specialisation sectors where the Basque Country can shine in the future.

Among the fields mentioned by both officials, special mention should be made of the energy sector, advance manufacturing the BIO and NANO companies and projects. The European Commissioner also stressed the capacity of the business fabric made up of SMEs to go further into the adoption and participation of R&D project.
