The Basque Country showcases its model for integrating Artificial Intelligence with students’ digital skills
The Basque Government’s Department of Education is committed to promoting the intelligent and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in schools, ensuring that students not only develop technological skills but also learn to use technology ethically and critically.
The event ‘Policies for the digital transformation and integration of AI in TVET,’ organised by UNESCO-UNEVOC in Kuala Lumpur, provided a platform to showcase how Basque vocational training has successfully combined Artificial Intelligence and digital awareness with the digital skills of both teachers and students.
Bridging Innovation and Learning in TVET (BILT) aims to build a global knowledge bridge, supporting countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia-Pacific that are seeking to address current challenges posed by technological, social, environmental, and professional changes.
A key challenge discussed at the event was the integration of Artificial Intelligence with Vocational Training. Held in Malaysia, the event facilitated the exchange and discussion of policies and best practices on Artificial Intelligence use and implementation
A panel discussion on regional policies and strategies for driving digital transformation and AI integration in Vocational Education and Training featured representatives from KRIVET (South Korea), NCVER (Australia), and the Basque Government, providing a European perspective. The Department of Education remains committed to fostering the intelligent and responsible use of AI in educational centres, so that students not only master the technology but also apply it ethically and critically. As Inge Gorostiaga, Director of the Department of Education, Digital Transformation and Advanced Learning, highlighted at the conference, “We place inclusion, ethics and student empowerment at the centre of the process of incorporating artificial intelligence into vocational training, aiming to give a human face to technology.”
Sixteen global best practices in Artificial Intelligence were featured in the BILT Poster Gallery at the event. These selected projects, research, and policies demonstrated how digital technologies and AI integration are being developed within Vocational Training. Among these, the Basque Country’s approach was highlighted for effectively combining artificial intelligence and digital awareness with the digital skills of both teachers and students.
