The Basque Government promotes Basque fishery products at the 25th Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona

The Department of Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries of the Basque Government is currently taking part in the 25th edition of the Seafood Expo Global, lending its support to Basque companies from the fishing and seafood sector who are showcasing their products and taking part in roundtable discussions at this key international event, one of the most important seafood fairs on the European calendar. The fair is running from today until 8 May at Fira Barcelona’s Gran Via exhibition centre.

Euskadi’s presence is centred around the Euskadi Basque Country institutional stand, located in Hall 4 – Stand 4F301, where five Basque companies focused on processing and marketing fishery products are exhibiting: Bacalaos Alkorta: Specialists in desalted, salted, and frozen cod using cutting-edge HPP technology; Precocinados Gorena: Offers a wide range of frozen and pre-cooked products for both HORECA and retail markets; Congelados Sorymar: A national leader in fish freezing, holding MSC certification; Nortindal Sea Products: A global leader in cuttlefish ink and ready-to-use seafood sauces; Kofradia Itsas Etxea: A promotional space dedicated to inshore fishing, driven by Basque fishermen’s associations.

In addition, several other Basque companies are participating elsewhere in the fair, including Angulas Aguinaga, Newfish, Salica Industria Alimentaria, and the Organisation of Deep-sea Fishing Producers of the Port of Ondarroa. Basque companies will also have a presence in the Seafood Processing Global section, with participation from ULMA Packaging, Kuari Engineering, SKV, and Indo Transportes.

Vice-Minister Leandro Azkue and Director Ixone Soroa are attending to show institutional backing for the sector and highlight the Basque Country’s ongoing focus on sustainable fishing and international promotion.

“The Basque fishing sector stands out for its identity, built on product quality, skilled professionals, and a clear commitment to sustainability and innovation,” said Leandro Azkue, Vice-Minister for Fisheries and Coastal Development. “Our presence at Seafood Global isn’t just about promotion, it’s a statement of intent and a step toward securing the future of the sector.”

The Basque Government’s involvement in this fair is part of its broader strategy to support the internationalisation of primary and fisheries sector products, helping to expand into new markets and reinforce the Basque Country’s reputation as a European leader in fish processing, responsible fishing, and food quality.
